These aren't experimental pilots anymore — they're production infrastructure carrying meaningful support load.

The economics are what's driving the shift

Analysis from Oliver Wyman this year points to telecom operators seeing operating-cost reductions in the range of 30-40% in support functions where AI has been deployed well, alongside notable cuts in the manual after-call work agents used to handle. The per-interaction math tells a similar story: an AI-handled interaction typically costs a fraction of what a human agent conversation costs, which is exactly why the pressure to automate more of the ticket queue keeps building — and why vendors are increasingly pricing these tools per resolved issue rather than per seat.

Connectivity tickets are still the hard part

Not everything automates cleanly. Billing questions and plan changes are relatively easy for AI to close out because the answer usually lives in a database. Connectivity troubleshooting is different — it's typically the highest-volume ticket type an ISP handles, and resolving it for real means taking an action in the network itself: checking a line, triggering a reboot, or confirming a service credit, not just pointing someone to a help article. That's also where outage spikes hurt the most, since a single fiber cut or power outage can multiply inbound contacts within minutes, right when consistent, fast responses matter most.
